Job Title – Mortgage Loan Underwriter
General Summary
Responsible for underwriting residential loans, preparing necessary approval documents and reviewing files to ensure compliance with regulatory, investor, and credit union guidelines. Responsible for coordinating the overall file flow between processing and underwriting to ensure efficient and effective review of files and meeting target close dates.
Mortgage Underwriter Job Duties
- Evaluate and underwrite residential mortgage loans including Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, NIFA, and Portfolio/In-House.
- Ensure accuracy with secondary market, investor, or in-house guidelines prior to closing (appraisal, income, assets, credit, etc.).
- Ensure all underwriting requirements are met for pre-closing, closing, and post-closing along with making sure clear title insurance policy has been obtained with post-closing verification.
- Prepare weekly reports to inform loan officers of their loan progress/pipelines.
- Prepare all necessary approval documents including worksheets required to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and investors.
- Reviews conditions/resubmissions of existing files to ensure compliance with secondary marketing/regulatory guidelines.
- Calculates and verifies member’s income, assets and liabilities, verifying credit worthiness and ability to repay loan.
- Analyzes loan file and renders loan approval within Credit Approval limits.
- Review individual pipeline work process to ensure timely turnaround time is being done.
- Ensures compliance with various mortgage regulations including but not limited to HDMA, TILA-RESPA, ECOA, etc.
- Maintain members and staff confidentiality and professionalism.
- Develop a working knowledge of the data processing system and department software.
Credit Union Job Duties
- Actively support our “sales and service “culture and demonstrate these skills by communicating to associates the benefits/features of related products/services.
- Expect/embrace change by being flexible and adaptable. Meet performance objectives/expectations (i.e. Sales, Quality Service and Reliability).
- Participate in community/business related events. Conduct oneself in a positive professional manner in relationship to all credit union activities.
- Complete in-house training based on required classes set up for this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of mortgage underwriting experience required with at least 2 years of experience tied to FHA loan underwriting. 5 years of experience preferred.
- FHA Direct Endorsement certification preferred.
- Professional, well-developed interpersonal skills required.
- Highly skilled at exercising appropriate judgment and decision-making required.
Work Hours - Full-time
Wage
- Wage is commensurate with experience and skills
- This position is eligible for a discretionary gain-share plan payment annually

Paid Leave
- Vacation– 2 weeks/year

- Holiday Pay – 6 paid holidays/year + 5 additional federal holidays per year. For 1 of the 5, staff are required to attend an all-staff meeting, the remaining 4 may be provided as holiday pay based on LFCU's discretion.
